Title: Hurdy-Gurdy Festival
The hurdy-gurdy festival in the Pearl of Pragelato is since 31 years a traditional event, particularly appreciated by tourists and local people, because dancing together makes everyone happy!
The hurdy-gurdy (vielle à roue in French, ghironda in Italian) is a medieval stringed instrument, which is the focus of numerous European folk music festivals, especially in France and Hungary.
The secret of this instrument's functioning is a wooden wheel, which is operated by a crank and thus makes the individual strings vibrate.
The hurdy-gurdy festival is a unique opportunity to meet instrument makers and musicians alike. During the festival lots of different music styles come together and merge in unexpected and exciting ways.
This festival is not only for Hurdy-Gurdy professionals: Even unexperienced visitors are invited to try out this fantastic instrument and play themselves.
The typical dances of the Occitan valleys performed attract everyone. A hilarious and yet captivating atmosphere pervades every little corner of Pragelato.
