the Moverence Conference

Lucerne, Switzerland

Last week, I attended a great and thought-provoking event in Lucerne, Switzerland. Almost 50 people gathered at Moverence to discuss the topic of Regenerative Tourism.

But what does regenerative tourism mean? This concept goes beyond ‘sustainable tourism‘ by addressing a deeper change, a paradigm shift, in people, businesses and organisations. It has been strongly influenced by Anna Pollock in recent decades, who implements international projects in this area and educates about it. It was impressive to hear her speak in Lucerne and lovely to have the opportunity to exchange ideas with her over lunch.

In general, I had many enriching conversations. The ‘moving’ conference concept made this possible, whether during train or bus rides to UNESCO Biosphere reserve and regional nature park Entlebuch, during breaks or simply in plenary. There was a beautiful, warm atmosphere and an honest interest in each other's views, which I found special.

Concerning the regeneration approach, I particularly like that, as I understand it so far, it does not start with the (negative) symptoms of tourism practices, but at the origin, the intrinsic mindset of each individual. This seems to be a much more difficult goal for socio-psychological reasons, but it is probably necessary for a ‘green transformation’ - the changed inner values, integrity, and closing the attitude-behaviour gap. I know that this is a very idealistic view (as we have also learnt, that only 20% are ‘practicing’ (so-called) ‘eco-fans‘, 20% are not interested and not willing in a holistic, responsible behaviour, and 60% want to act but don't do it - so here lies a big potential).

The organising team did a fantastic job, and I hope that this project will continue in the future. Thank you for all the contributions and all the connections made!
