MoU between Carpathian Euroregion and Alpine Pearls
On 3 September 2025, during the Economic Forum in Karpacz, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Association of the Carpathian Euroregion and the EGTC Alpine Pearls.
The agreement was signed by Dawid Lasek (President) and Piotr Pilch (Vice-President) for the Carpathian Euroregion, and by Peter Brandauer (President) for Alpine Pearls. The ceremony took place in the Cracow University of Technology Zone, in the presence of Rector Prof. Andrzej Szarata, who underlined the scientific value of this partnership.
An Alpine-Carpathian Bridge
The MoU establishes an “Alpine-Carpathian Bridge of Cooperation” between the largest territorial cooperation organisation in the Carpathians (Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Ukraine) and the Alpine network Alpine Pearls (Austria, Germany, Slovenia, Italy).
The common goal is to strengthen the role of Europe’s mountain regions in the agenda for sustainability and balanced local development.
The two organisations have already had the chance to intensify their cooperation within the EU project Central Mountains (Interreg Central Europe), which has fostered exchanges on governance, sustainable tourism and mobility in mountain areas.
Sustainable tourism and soft mobility at the core
The MoU places particular emphasis on:
- Sustainable tourism: joint development and promotion of mountain territorial brands, exchange of best practices, and support for the Carpathian Sustainable Tourism Platform.
- Soft mobility: integrated solutions for public transport and micro-mobility, reducing traffic and emissions while improving accessibility of mountain destinations.
Broader cooperation areas
Beyond tourism and mobility, the agreement also covers:
- economic development and international cooperation;
- creation of an alliance of mountain territorial brands;
- fostering scientific potential and innovation across the Alps and the Carpathians;
- elaboration and implementation of shared strategies and projects.
Outlook
A joint coordination team will be established to design and monitor annual and multi-annual work plans. The MoU has an initial duration of four years.
With this agreement, the Alps and the Carpathians take an important step towards stronger collaboration, positioning Europe’s mountains as laboratories for sustainability, innovation and resilience.
