The Italians call it the “Ferrovia delle Meraviglie”, the railway of wonders. And the name is well deserved. The railway that leads to Limone Piemonte is one of Europe’s most spectacular routes. It was opened way back in 1891. Since then, it has been bringing guests who want to be close to heaven to Limone Piemonte in both summer and winter. In winter, Limone Piemonte is known for its guaranteed snow and extensive Riserva Bianca ski area, which waits to delight you with its 80 kilometres of slopes. Despite its natural treasures, there’s no sign of the mass tourism and supersizing seen in other regions here. Limone Piemonte has retained its original charm throughout the centuries. It’s a village that has grown with history and stories and is a real insider secret for fans of indulgence and adventures who want to enjoy experiences in the peace of the Alps and the surrounding nature parks in both summer and winter. Worth experiencing. Heavenly peace in Limone Piemonte.
Standing right at the top is an incredible feeling. The valley beneath you. The mountains beside you. The sky above you. And far in the distance, the deep-blue sea. Looking at the natural beauty before you, you’re filled with a feeling of heavenly peace. All that matters is the present moment – in Limone Piemonte, the gateway to heaven.
Not a cloud blemishes the sky. The sun shines enthusiastically, warming the fresh mountain air that flows into your lungs. Take a deep breath. It’s time to embark on your next adventure on two wheels. With its numerous challenging tours and single trails, Limone Piemonte is a bona fide paradise for bikers. The tours lead high up into the peaceful mountain world, past rustic mountain villages, imposing fortifications, and even to the coast. The dense network of trails that spans Liguria, France, and Piedmont is known as the Alta Via del Sale and was used from the time of the Middle Ages to transport salt inland from the sea. Today, the Alta Via del Sale is divided into nine stages, which lead from Limone Piemonte to the Ligurian riviera. It’s quite rightly considered one of the most beautiful bike tours in Europe and can be conquered by e-bike or with pure muscle power. If you prefer it short and spicy, you’ll adore the numerous trails with a wide range of difficulty levels and downhill trails.
You unhurriedly set one foot in front of the other. Your gaze wanders over the lush-green Alpine meadows up to the striking mountain peaks that caress the sky. Step by step, you become more peaceful, your heart beats in time with nature. The numerous hikes that are so worth experiencing lead you into the unspoilt Roya and Vermaya valleys, to the 19th-century fortifications on Mt Colle di Tenda, and into the heart of the Maritime Alps Nature Park and neighbouring French Mercantour National Park, which have joined together to form the first European natural park. Other worthwhile hikes are the Via Romana, which links Limone Piemonte with the peaceful village of Limonetto, and the nature trail at the foot of Mt Murin. From Limone Piemonte, an easy path takes you to astoundingly beautiful Lake Terrasole, which sparkles like an emerald in the summer sunshine. On certain days, you can sit on the lake shore and listen to the musicians performing on a raft in the middle of the lake. Another natural jewel: the natural swimming pools in Vallone San Giovanni.
It’s a unique experience. You weave your way down the wide, perfectly groomed slopes – and suddenly, there it is: the sea. Far in the distance. This ski area with guaranteed snow, as boasted by the name Riserva Bianca (white reserve), delights skiers with its 17 ultra-modern lifts and 41 runs with a range of difficulty levels that span a total of 80 kilometres. On the various slopes, beginners and seasoned skiers, as well as people with physical disabilities, can ski to their heart’s content. Freeriders, on the other hand, love the pristine slopes that you can conveniently reach on the ski area’s lifts. If you prefer the solitude of the mountains, we recommend a ski tour up Mt Alpetta, Mt Bric Campanin, Mt Cima Pepino, or Mt Cima Pernante. Once you reach the top, you can enjoy a glorious view over the Alps all the way to Corsica.
The fresh snow softly crunches under your shoes. The gentle rays of sunshine bathe the winter landscape in an extraordinary light. You open your eyes to the natural beauty that surrounds you along the way. Walking on snowshoes around Limone Piemonte treats you to moments of pure bliss. Numerous rustic huts invite you to stop off en route. Replenish your energy for the way back down with traditional specialities like gnocchi, polenta, ravioli, or stuffed onion. After a short rest, return to the valley, where even more winter adventures await you. What catches your eye? Whether it’s cross-country skiing on perfectly groomed trails, ice-skating, tobogganing, snow kiting, or a ride on a snowmobile, in Limone Piemonte, the choice is yours.
