Looking Beyond Snow: Werfenweng’s Vision for a Resilient Alpine Future
What lies beyond snow? That question sparked a journey in Werfenweng – a pioneering Alpine Pearls community known for its commitment to soft mobility and sustainable tourism. Through the BeyondSnow project, Werfenweng is now shaping a bold new strategy for year-round tourism that embraces climate resilience and community-driven innovation.
From Challenge to Opportunity
Rather than retreating in the face of climate change, Werfenweng leaned in. Together with Alpine Pearls and local stakeholders, the community co-created a strategy that’s not just practical – it’s inspiring. Through workshops, excursions, and creative co-design labs, ideas emerged that show: transformation is possible, and it can be joyful.
Water Trails, Climate Stairs & Snowcat Food Trucks
The new project ideas are as imaginative as they are impactful:
- “BeyondSnow Water Adventure World”: A nature-based experience trail that connects water, wellness, and environmental education.
- “Foodtruck Snowcat”: A repurposed snow groomer becomes a mobile culinary station – sustainable, regional, and Instagram-ready.
- “Adventure Day in Werfenweng”: A full-day experience from sunrise hikes to tandem paragliding – designed for active, mindful travellers.
Co-Creation for a Sustainable Tomorrow
What makes Werfenweng’s strategy truly special is the deep involvement of the local community. From tourism directors to hiking guides, from hotel owners to mobility providers – everyone had a voice. This participatory approach strengthens not only the strategy but also the social fabric of the destination.
Alpine Pearls in Action
The BeyondSnow strategy is a living example of how Alpine Pearls’ core values come to life:
- Soft Mobility: Werfenweng expands its eco-friendly transport options, including the W3 shuttle and new local benefit cards.
- Year-Round Tourism: By reducing dependence on snow, the region offers diverse experiences in every season.
- Local Value Creation: Innovative gastronomy, regional products, and new target groups support sustainable economic development.
- Community Participation: The strategy was built with – not for – the people of Werfenweng.
Werfenweng shows how Alpine Pearls communities can lead the way in climate adaptation, while staying true to their identity and values.

It is a free digital platform to support decision-makers, politicians and local stakeholders, providing them with an initial overview of the vulnerability and resilience of their tourism destination to climate change.
